1 October 2026

Some billers are about to stop accepting cards. You can still pay how you want with Sniip.

From 1 October, businesses can no longer add a card surcharge to your bills. Card payments will still come at a cost to the business, so some are choosing to drop card payments altogether.

With Sniip, you can still pay them by Credit Card, Debit Card, Digital Wallets or PayTo Plus+ & more.

So what is changing?

Bank-level security. Your biller gets paid as normal.

The change

What the 1 October changes mean

The RBA handed down its final position on 31 March 2026, after an 18 month review of card payment costs.

01

No more surcharges

From 1 October 2026, businesses cannot add a surcharge to eftpos, Mastercard or Visa payments, including debit, prepaid and credit cards.

02

Acceptance for some cards should be lower

Caps on interchange are reduced for consumer credit cards. However, interchange for business and corporate cards remains the same.

03

Some cards aren’t affected

American Express, PayPal and BNPL are not covered by the RBA changes. However, Amex, JCB and UnionPay have said they will also remove surcharging from the same date.

For bill payers

What is happening?

If your biller was charging you a card surcharge, that goes away. The catch is that the cost has not disappeared, it has just moved onto the business. Some billers will absorb it. Others will simply stop accepting card payments.

Fewer options

A bill you have always paid by card may only allow you to pay via a bank transfer from 1 October. If they do offer card payments, it is possible that their cost of acceptance has been accounted for in a price increase.

Revolving credit facility

Many people prefer to pay bills with their credit card to take advantage of interest-free credit terms, allowing them to better manage cashflow. For many of your bills, this option may not exist after 1 October, unless you pay using Sniip.

Less points

A lot of consumer cards are reducing their points earn from October. With Sniip you can earn additional Qantas Points or Velocity Points, and even boost them using Points Booster.
