Paying with the Sniip app is completely free when using a debit card. When using a credit card (Amex/Mastercard/Visa) you’ll pay just 1.5% (incl GST) and earn FULL POINTS on your rewards-based card.
|Debit cards||Amex||Diners||VISA/Mastercard|| VISA/Mastercard |

*All international cards are recognised as credit cards and incur a 3% processing fee.
Short answer, no!
Why? You are essentially making a BPAY payment through Sniip.
Your biller receives the funds via BPAY. If there are no additional fees from the biller for making a BPAY payment, the only fee you’ll pay is the Sniip processing fee of 1.5% for Amex/Visa/Mastercard.
Using a debit card is 100% free in the Sniip app (when paying via BPAY).
There are no app download fees, subscription fees or other hidden fees in the Sniip app.
No, it is not treated as a cash advance.
Sniip is an authorised BPAY Payer Institution Member (PIM). We process your funds through our payment gateway, into a trust account with our banking partner. Once these funds have cleared, we make the BPAY payment on your behalf.
Because the funds are cleared in the trust account, it is treated as a normal credit card purchase, not a cash advance.
If you have a rewards credit card, you will earn points on the first leg of the transaction (payment into trust account) even if your payment method is not accepted by your biller.
Each BPAY biller is reviewed by Sniip to ensure it is in a permitted industry. This process is completed within one business day of you adding that biller for the first time into Sniip.
Due to the risk profile of certain billers, Sniip has initially restricted certain sectors.
These categories include:
- Remittance service provider
- Charities and Not-for-Profit
- Pay-day lenders
- Internet gambling
- Goods dealers
- Foreign exchange currencies
- Securities and derivatives
- Managed investment schemes
- International business operations
- International students or travel products
- Hiring and leasing
- Banking and financial institutions
Please note: If a biller has been restricted by us, you will receive a ‘blocked biller’ message when you try to process the bill payment.
Using an amex
There is a 1.5% (incl GST) processing fee for using any Amex card with Sniip.
Yes. If you have a rewards credit card you will earn FULL POINTS on all your bills at 1.5% (incl GST).
As an Amex cardholder, you may have been invited to take up an Amex Offer with Sniip.
For a limited time, eligible cards get 20% back, for each transaction, up to the value of $30 back when you pay your bill via the Sniip app.
Credit should appear on your Amex billing statement within five days from qualifying spend but may take up to 90 days from the offer end date. Terms and conditions apply.
Terms & Conditions
- Additional cards are not eligible for this offer
- Excludes transactions made through a third party
- Credit is not redeemable for cash or other payment form
- Credit will not be applied to your card account if you card has been suspended or cancelled
- Offer is limited to $30.00 per card to which the offer is saved and only spend on this card counts towards the offer
The processing fee for all Amex cards using the Sniip app is 1.5% (incl GST).
When you add a credit card to the Sniip app, we process a $1 charge to authorise your card. Rest assured this amount is refunded in full to your card within 48 hours.
Sure can! Sniip allows users to pay most billers with an Amex card using a BPAY Biller Code and Reference Number.
Please note: Unfortunately DEFT payments are not currently approved with Amex.
Why? There are some additional Amex requirements which we need to satisfy in order to process DEFT payments. We hope this will be available in the future and will let you know as soon as DEFT is available for Amex cards again.
This breaks our heart but we’re working on a solution.
Unfortunately, as DEFT payments don’t allow us to see who the final bill provider is, they are not currently approved with Amex.
Rest assured, we’re working on a solution and hope to turn DEFT payments back on in the near future.
You are still able to use a Visa or Mastercard for DEFT payments. We will let you know as soon as DEFT is available for Amex cards again.
Sniip has a direct partnership agreement with Amex. This allowed our processing fee to drop from 2.2% (2020) to 1.5% (incl GST) (2021 and beyond).
The advantage of using Sniip is that you earn FULL POINTS on all your bills using Sniip (including at the ATO).
Unfortunately, we are restricted from allowing payments to certain billers using credit facilities, as determined by BPAY and our banking partners.
This means, you aren’t able to pay credit facilities with a credit card. Should you wish to pay this biller with a debit card (0% processing fee), we could facilitate this transaction.

For BPAY payments, Sniip will let the user know prior to confirming the payment when the bill will be processed via BPAY to the biller
This is generally the next business day (unless using a Diners card which takes an extra business day). Sniip will let the user know the date of payment to your biller prior to payment.
The Biller must recognise the BPAY payment as the date that the bill was paid.
For payments utilising the Sniip QR code, Sniip uses the same payment gateway as the relevant biller.
However, each biller may have different transfer timeframes and there may be delays in the funds being received into your billers account.
The cut-off times for Sniip to receive your payment for processing the following day are as follow:
- 11.59pm AEDT Visa/Mastercard
- 6pm AEDT Amex
- 6pm AEDT Diners
Yes! Once you add your bill, simply amend the amount to be paid and pay a part of your bill.
Please note: Unfortunately, certain billers require you to pay the full amount in one transaction. Examples of payments that cannot be paid in instalments include: car registration, fines and licence renewal fees. Sniip will automatically prevent you from partially paying these particular billers.
Absolutely! After a successful payment you will get a transaction receipt which is stored under the History tab of the Sniip app. This receipt can be emailed to you from the app ready for tax time/account reconciliation.
If your payment fails, please check your card details are correct and up to date.
As your information is securely stored, you will only be able to view the last 4 digits of your card in the Sniip app.
You may need to delete your current card in ‘Payment Methods’ and re-enter the card details.

If you are making a large payment and are getting a declined message even though you believe you have the funds available to make the payment, we would suggest contacting your financial institution.
If your financial institution identifies a large transaction that seems out of the ordinary, it may be stopped or flagged as fraudulent. Once you contact your bank and explain that you are making a transaction via Sniip they should enable the transaction. If you have any questions or wish to discuss your transaction, please contact the Sniip Support Squad or call (07) 3268 7710.
Unfortunately Sniip is unable to issue refunds. All refunds must be initiated by your biller. Please contact your biller directly to request a refund for your payment.
If the payment has already been processed by Sniip, you will need to contact your biller directly.
When you add a bill into the Sniip app, you may schedule a payment for the due date. BPAY payments need to be made three days prior to the due date to ensure that the biller will receive and reconcile the payment. This is set-up as a default to ensure your bill is paid on time (but can be amended by you).
If you are having difficulties scanning your bill, try some of the following troubleshooting steps:
- Make sure there is ample light
- Try holding your phone closer/further away from the code
- Clean your phone camera lens
- Ensure you have selected the type of bill (Sniip, BPAY, AusPost, etc.) via the icons on the scanner screen
- Ensure you are scanning a Sniip QR code/ BPAY Biller Code or AusPost Code.
If you are opening a PDF of your bill on your phone, simply tap the ‘import’ icon, then tap ‘Sniip’.
A copy of your bill will be added to the Sniip app ready for payment.
