Using an Amex
As part of our contract with American Express, we are required to determine business vs personal based on the purpose of the payment and the type of industry your biller falls under.
American Express restricts the personal rate to the following industry categories:
- Tax payments (excluding ATO payments)
- Telecommunications services
- Cable and other pay television services
- Utilities
- Electric, gas, water, and sanitary
- Insurance sales, underwriting, and premiums
- Real estate agents and managers
- Rentals
- Parking lots and garages
- Dance halls, studios, and schools
- Membership clubs (sports, recreation, athletic), country clubs, and private golf courses
- Doctors and physicians – not elsewhere classified
- Hospitals
- Medical services and health practitioners – not elsewhere classified
- Elementary and secondary schools
- Colleges, universities, professional schools, and junior colleges
- Correspondence schools
- Business and secretarial schools
- Trade and vocational schools
- Schools and educational services – not elsewhere classified
- Child care services
- Court costs, including alimony and child support
- Fines
- Government Services – not elsewhere classified
If your bill/invoice falls outside of these categories, we can still process your bill, however, we are required by American Express to process the payment at our tiered business rates.
We appreciate the payment may be a personal payment to you, however we are bound by the category list for personal payments as defined by American Express.
We are actively working with American Express to broaden these categories.
You can now pay bills that don’t offer BPAY with Sniip – it’s been our #1 requested feature and it’s now live!
If your biller doesn’t accept your credit card directly, you can now pay to their BSB & Account Number, even if BPAY is not available.
You can learn how to pay BSB and Account Numbers here.
As such, DEFT payments don’t allow us to see who your final bill provider is. Due to this, they are blocked through Sniip by American Express.
This impacts the following DEFT payments:
- DEFT Insurance Broking Payments (BPAY Biller Code 20362)
- DEFT Payment Systems (BPAY Biller Code 96503)
- DEFT Payments Systems-Rent (BPAY Biller Code 4481)
- DEFT Legal Payments (BPAY Biller Code 423236)
If you scan the QR code on your bill, it may come up that the biller doesn’t accept Amex. Make sure you scan or enter the details of the BPAY Biller Code, which will allow you to make the payment with your American Express credit card.
*Restricted/prohibited industries apply
When you add a credit card to the Sniip app, we process a $1 charge to authorise your card. Rest assured this amount is refunded in full to your card within 48 hours.
Sniip is an authorised BPAY Payer Institution Member (PIM). We process your funds through our payment gateway, into a trust account with our banking partner. Once these funds have cleared, we make the BPAY payment on your behalf.
Because the funds are cleared in the trust account, it is treated as a normal credit card purchase, not a cash advance.
If you have a rewards credit card, you will earn points on the first leg of the transaction (payment into trust account) even if your payment method is not accepted by your biller.
Unfortunately, we are restricted from allowing payments to certain billers using credit facilities, as determined by BPAY and our banking partners.
This means, you aren’t able to pay credit facilities with a credit card or a debit card, but you can pay from a bank account. Paying from a bank account is completely free in the Sniip app, and this way you are able to keep using Sniip to store and organise all your bills and invoices.
If you have any questions, please email Sniip Support Squad or call (07) 3268 7710 for more information.
Sniip users benefit from the best processing fees in market, you can read more about our American Express – Business tiered pricing, here.
Plus, it’s the easiest and quickest way to pay your bill (and earn full points).
You can explore our Amex x Sniip hub, here or speak with our Amex x Sniip representative Jennifer by calling (07) 3268 7710.
Great question! We’ve built a points calculator just for you, superstar! You can explore the points calculator, here.
Points are provided by your credit card provider and your points earn per $1 spend (i.e. 1.25 points) can differ from card to card. Please review your card providers terms and conditions for points earning eligibility.
Sniip was a consumer app, offering a consumer rate. We appreciate there was growing demand for business payments with Sniip and to continue to offer this service, we were required to offer a business rate.
We’ve worked really hard to keep our rate as low as possible to accommodate business payments and the rate is reflective of what we’re being charged to process the payment – not a margin increase for Sniip!
However, the good news is, our after tax rate on all our business tiers are below 1.5%!
Absolutely! You earn full points (even at the ATO) on the transaction amount and the processing fee.
Tier (single payment amount) | Rate % (+ GST) | **After Tax Rate |
$0 – $99,999 | 1.99% | 1.49% |
$100,000 – $299,999 | 1.95% | 1.46% |
$300,000 – $499,999 | 1.90% | 1.43% |
$500,000 – $999,999 | 1.85% | 1.39% |
$1,000,000+ | 1.75% | 1.31% |
We certainly do! You can earn bonus Velocity Points on all of your business payments through Sniip when you link your Virgin Australia Business Flyer Account to your Sniip account.

At the moment, we’re unable to process payments with an American Express card through enabled digital wallets (Apple Pay or Google Pay), as we need to be able to determine the type of American express card you are using for pricing and contractual purposes.
We’re working to turn this functionality back on as soon as possible.
In the interim, you can add your American Express to your Payments Methods in Sniip and process the payment using the card. To add a payment method to your Sniip Wallet, tap on the top left hand menu and select ‘Payment Methods’.
The first time you add a payment method, you’ll see a ‘+’ in the payment methods screen.
You can explore more about adding a payment method, here.
If you’re making a personal payment to the ATO on a personal card, you’ll be charged at the business rates. Payments to the ATO, including superannuation, are always charged at the business rate when using any American Express card.
If you have an ABN, you may be classified as a business. If you’re making a business payment with a personal American Express card, you may be charged at the business rate.
The good news is, all rates are clearly shown before you make the payment and you can always clarify with us before you process the payment.
We’re really proud of our partnership with American Express and being able to offer the best business rates in the market.
As part of our contract with American Express, we determine business versus personal based on the purpose of the payment. Please note that all payments to the ATO are charged at our business rates.
If the purpose of the payment is for business, i.e, to pay a business bill/ invoice/ stock, you’ll be charged at the business rate.
If you have any questions, please email customercare@sniip.com or phone
(07) 3268 7710.
All processing fee amounts are clearly displayed before you make a payment, and you can always clarify with us before you process the payment.
The processing fee for personal payments using a personal card is 1.5%, excluding American Express personal cards. The rate for personal American Express cards is 1.29%. Please note that payments to the ATO using any Amex (personal/corporate/business) are charged at our business rates.
Up until October 15, 2022, Sniip was a consumer app with a consumer rate for American Express payments.
As you can appreciate, the rate we were charging was well below existing rates for business payments made using an American Express.
American Express identified that business payments were being made through our consumer app. We had the option of discontinuing our service for business users, or adopting the market processing rate for Amex partners facilitating business payments.
Notwithstanding that, we remain committed to being the most competitive in our pricing and will ensure we are adhering to that commitment.
We (and our users) know we have the best product and we hope you’ll continue to enjoy the many benefit of using Sniip too!
If it is a business card, American Express deems it to be used for business purposes and that would be charged at the business rate.
However, we’d strongly recommend you apply for the same card in the consumer/ personal version when making personal payments. The rate for personal American Express cards is 1.29%. Please note, personal payments to the ATO using a personal Amex will be charged at our business rates.
Absolutely! The processing fee for all Visa/Mastercards is 1.5%.
We see you, you cheeky monkey!
It comes down to the purpose of your payment and the card you’re using. A business payment on a personal card will be flagged by Amex as a business expense.
Not right now, we’re working on it!
In current form, Sniip is a mobile app availabe on iOS and Android devices.

BSB + Account Numbers
Short answer: Two to three days.
When a bank account payment is made through Sniip, it will move to the processing stage within two business days. This component of the transaction utilises the BPAY scheme and is subject to the BPAY terms.
The cut-off times for Sniip to receive your payment for processing within two business days is as follows:
- 6pm AEDT/5pm AEST
Please allow sufficient time for your payment to be processed. Funds take roughly 24 hours to finalise and be deposited into the billers account. We suggest always paying your bills three days in advance.
You can find a time stamped receipt under the ‘Receipts’ in the Sniip app. Here, you’ll see the exact time your payment was made to your biller via BPAY. The biller must recognise the BPAY payment as the date that the bill was paid.
Great question! You can update the payment method for any scheduled or recurring payment by going into the ‘Payments’ tab in the Sniip app.
Tap on the payment you want to update, then tap ‘Edit Payment’ and ‘Edit Recurring Payment’ if you’re amending the payment method on a recurring payment.
Tap the ‘Next’ button. Swipe through your Payment Methods to find the correct one and tap ‘Next’. Review the details for this payment, select ‘Confirm’ and then enter your PIN/Face ID.
Please note: You need to repeat this process for each of the scheduled bills you want to update.
You will see this error message if incorrect details have been entered. We’d recommend checking to ensure the details you provided are correct.
If you’re still experiencing this issue, please contact our Sniip Support Squad on (07) 3268 7710 or email customercare@sniip.com.
When adding your bank account, Sniip will deposit a small amount to verify the information you provided.
Once you’ve added your account details, check your bank account and look for a deposit called SN. Copy the five characters after ‘SN’.
Go back to the Sniip app, enter the five numbers and enter ‘Verify now’. If successful, you should see the ‘Bank account verified’ screen!
After adding your bank account details, check your bank account to find a deposit from Sniip, containing “SN”. This SN code must be entered into the Sniip app in order to verify your bank details.
If you’re unable to find ‘SN’ and a series of numbers, it is likely being cut-off by the desktop application. Please open your banking app where you were see the ‘SN’ displayed in the statement reference/description.
Learn more about adding and verifying your BSB and Account Number here.
When adding a bank account to your Sniip wallet, we will need to verify your identity.

Short answer, no!
Why? You are essentially making a BPAY payment through Sniip.
Your biller receives the funds via BPAY. If there are no additional fees from the biller for making a BPAY payment, the only fee you’ll pay is the Sniip processing fee of 1.29% for Amex Personal and 1.5% for Visa, Mastercard and Diners. Please see our full list of processing fees, here.
Paying from your bank account is 100% free in the Sniip app.
There are no app download fees, subscription fees or other hidden fees in the Sniip app.
If you pay a direct biller utilising the Sniip QR code or the AusPost Barcode, you may incur fees and/or charges imposed by the biller. These payment processing costs may be reflected at the time of making payment, or on your next bill from that biller.
Unfortunately we’ve had to immediately restrict all payments to Managed App (BPAY Biller Code 800003) as disappointingly, some users were making payments to Managed App through Sniip and were then withdrawing the funds.
Sniip is unable to provide payment services where this can occur as it is in breach of our banking agreements.
We’re currently working with Managed App to explore ways to re-enable these payments and turn this biller back on for our valued users.
If you’ve paid Managed App with Sniip previously, you’ll be personally notified when this is resolved.
Additionally, by being a registered user of Sniip, we’ll advise you of the update in our fortnightly user communications when we reach an outcome.
No, it is not treated as a cash advance.
Sniip is an authorised BPAY Payer Institution Member (PIM). The process is simple: Sniip receives the payment for the bill from a user and once these funds have cleared, Sniip processes that payment on your behalf via BPAY.
Because the funds are cleared as a payment to Sniip, it is treated as a normal credit card purchase, not a cash advance.
Each BPAY biller is reviewed by Sniip to ensure it is in a permitted industry. This process is completed within one business day of you adding that biller for the first time into Sniip.
Due to the risk profile of certain billers, Sniip has initially restricted certain sectors.
These categories include:
- Remittance service provider
- Charities and Not-for-Profit
- Intermediaries
- Pay-day lenders
- Internet gambling
- Casinos
- Goods dealers
- Foreign exchange currencies
- Securities and derivatives
- Managed investment schemes
- International business operations
- International students or travel products
- Hiring and leasing
- Banking and financial institutions
If you believe you should be able to pay any of these billers, please contact the Sniip Support Squad or call (07) 3268 7710 and we will evaluate your biller on a case-by-case basis.
Please note: If a biller has been restricted by us, you will receive a ‘blocked biller’ message when you try to process the bill payment.

Absolutely! We’ve been a trusted partner of Urban Utilities since 2016.
You can pay Urban Utilities via Sniip using the BPAY Biller Code on your Urban Utilities bill, read more here.
Plus, you can use your American Express card for the payment too!
(Updated 2 February, 2024).
Short answer, no!
Credit card providers determine whether you are eligible for full rewards by looking at the billers MCC code. Our MCC code for Visa, Amex and Mastercard is 7399, which should not be excluded from their reward programs.
This means, when you pay with Sniip you can earn full reward points!
For BPAY payments, Sniip will let the user know prior to confirming the payment when the bill will be processed via BPAY to the biller.
This is generally the next business day (unless using a Diners card which takes an extra business day). Sniip will let the user know the date of payment to your biller prior to payment.
The Biller must recognise the BPAY payment as the date that the bill was paid.
For payments utilising the Sniip QR code, Sniip uses the same payment gateway as the relevant biller.
However, each biller may have different transfer timeframes and there may be delays in the funds being received into your billers account.

- Bank account: 6pm AEST for 2-business day processing (payments from a Bank Account require an additional day processing time. As such, the cut-off time for two business day processing is 6pm AEDT.)
Yes! Once you add your bill, simply amend the amount to be paid and pay a part of your bill.
Please note: Unfortunately, certain billers require you to pay the full amount in one transaction. Examples of payments that cannot be paid in instalments include: car registration, fines and licence renewal fees. Sniip will automatically prevent you from partially paying these particular billers.
Absolutely! After a successful payment you will get a transaction receipt which is stored under the ‘Receipts’ tab of the Sniip app.
This receipt can be emailed to you from the app ready for tax time/account reconciliation.
The receipt will display the processing fee, GST, total amount paid and has our ABN number.
If your payment fails, please check your card details are correct and up to date.
As your information is securely stored, you will only be able to view the last 4 digits of your card in the Sniip app.
You may need to delete your current card in ‘Payment Methods’ and re-enter the card details.
If you have any questions or require further assistance, please contact the Sniip Support Squad or call (07) 3268 7710.
When a payment is made through Sniip it automatically goes into the processing stage. This component of the transaction utilises the BPAY scheme and is subject to the BPAY terms.
A payment may take up to three business days to reach your biller from the time a payment is made.
The cut-off times for Sniip to receive your payment for processing the following day are as follow:
- American Express: 5pm AEST
- Visa/Mastercard debit: 5pm AEST
- Visa/Mastercard credit: 11:59pm AEST
Please note: Diners Club cards and pay from Bank Account require one additional day processing time. As such, the cut-off time for two business day processing is 5pm AEST.
Sniip provides you with the flexibility to pay your bills with your own money, in instalments, before your bill is due.
To create a Sniip instalment plan, simply tap on the bill you wish to pay and tap ‘Schedule’, then tap ‘Create Instalment Plan’. You can then set-up a bill due date and the number of instalments you wish to pay. Simple!
Check out our blog post on Instalment Plans to learn all about using this feature in the Sniip app.
Sniip instalments is not a offer a Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) option. To use BNPL with Sniip, you can use AfterPay or Zip Money through your digital wallet.
To remove a payment method, tap the top left hand corner menu and select ‘Payment Methods’.
In the ‘Payment Method’ screen, tap the blue ‘Edit’ icon at the bottom of your screen.
Tap the ‘trash’ icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen and follow the prompts to remove your payment method.
Unfortunately, we are restricted from allowing payments to certain billers using credit facilities, as determined by BPAY and some of our banking partners.
Sniip has no transaction limit. There are however, minimum and maximum payment amounts determined by each biller.
If you are making a large payment and are getting a declined message even though you believe you have the funds available to make the payment, we would suggest contacting your financial institution.
If your financial institution identifies a large transaction that seems out of the ordinary, it may be stopped or flagged as fraudulent. Once you contact your bank and explain that you are making a transaction via Sniip they should enable the transaction. If you have any questions or wish to discuss your transaction, please contact the Sniip Support Squad or call (07) 3268 7710.
Unfortunately Sniip is unable to issue refunds. All refunds must be initiated by your biller. Please contact your biller directly to request a refund for your payment.
To stop a payment, you must request Sniip to stop the payment before it has been processed by emailing the Sniip Support Squad or calling (07) 3268 7710.
If the payment has already been processed by Sniip, you will need to contact your biller directly.
When you add a bill into the Sniip app, you may schedule a payment for the due date. BPAY payments need to be made three days prior to the due date to ensure that the biller will receive and reconcile the payment. This is set-up as a default to ensure your bill is paid on time (but can be amended by you).
If you are having difficulties scanning your bill, try some of the following troubleshooting steps:
- Make sure there is ample light
- Try holding your phone closer/further away from the code
- Clean your phone camera lens
- Ensure you have selected the type of bill (Sniip, BPAY, AusPost, etc.) via the icons on the scanner screen
- Ensure you are scanning a Sniip QR code/ BPAY Biller Code or AusPost Code.
If you continue experiencing difficulties, please contact the Sniip Support Squad or call (07) 3268 7710.
If you are opening a PDF of your bill on your phone, simply tap the ‘import’ icon, then tap ‘Sniip’.
A copy of your bill will be added to the Sniip app ready for payment.
Great question! Tap and hold your finger over the bill you wish to delete.
A delete banner and icon will pop up, tap ‘delete’ to confirm removing your bill.
Unfortunately we’re unable to facilitate payments to DEFT with an American Express card or prepaid card (gift card)/crypto.com card.
This is in place as we are unable to see who the final biller is.
To pay DEFT via Sniip, please use Bank Account, Debit Card, Credit Card (not Amex) or Visa Card (not prepaid card).
Alternatively, if you’re paying rent through DEFT you may wish to make the payment via BSB & Account number if these details have been provided by your rental agency. You can learn more about making payments to a BSB & Account Number, here.
If you’re not a business, you can’t claim the GST component. Only if you’re personally registered for GST and you have your own ABN. If you are a business, you need to be registered for GST to claim it back.
Sniip Security
Great question! Your payment security is our top priority.
We ensure all payment data entered into a Sniip application or transmitted as part of a transaction is managed with the highest level of security. At Sniip, we’re proud to have achieved full Tier 1, Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) compliance — the same standard that Australian banks comply with.
To learn more about how we manage compliance and security at Sniip, contact the Sniip Support Squad or call (07) 3268 7710.
We sure are! At Sniip, we’re proud to be certified Tier 1 Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) compliant. This is the same standard that an Australian bank must comply with.
As part of Sniip’s Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements, we may ask you to verify your identity . Sniip is a regulated Bill Payment Service provider and we are a member of BPAY. This requires us to undertake significant compliance assessments in order to provide our service.
As part of this commitment, Sniip is required to identify our customers and verify that their information is correct for the purpose of addressing Anti Money-Laundering/Counter-Terrorism Funding risk, fraud and misappropriation risk, as well as requirements imposed by our banking and regulatory partners.
Sniip is fully PCI DSS compliant (Tier 1) and protects all Sniip user information with the same level of security as payment card details. That is why we will never email you to provide these details, only submit them via the Sniip app.
In order for us to verify your identity we require a copy of your valid Australian Driver Licence or Passport which clearly shows your full name, date of birth and photograph.
If you have any questions, please contact our Sniip Support Squad or call (07) 3268 7710 and one of our friendly team members will walk you through the process.
Your credit card data is encrypted and securely stored. Credit/debit card details are only sent to verified third party payment gateways at the time of payment.
When you pay via the BPAY Biller Code and Reference Number using Sniip, funds are acquired by Sniip the business day after the transaction. The same day Sniip receives the funds, they are transmitted to the service provider via the BPAY network.
The process is simple: Sniip receives the payment for the bill from a user and once these funds have cleared, Sniip processes that payment on your behalf via BPAY.
Sniip is an authorised BPAY Payer Institution Members (PIM) member. You can read about our partnership with BPAY on their wesbite, here.
If you scan the Sniip QR code (offered on some Queensland council and utilities bills), payments are processed directly to the service provider.
If you scan the AusPost barcode, payments are processed via Australia Post to the service provider.
Sniip only shares the required transaction information with the service provider you make payments with for reconciliation purposes.
At Sniip, security is our priority. We never share your information with any other third party.

Short answer: Yes!
Long answer: You can use Sniip if you’re outside Australia, however as part of our stringent fraud management protocols, any bill payment that we identify as being paid outside Australia will be flagged for review. In this instance, you will be contacted to verify your account as part of our Know Your Customer (KYC) process.
Once we have verified you as a user and confirmed you are either travelling or living abroad, we will make a note on your account and you can continue to use Sniip to make bill payments. If you are unsure what is an appropriate form of ID, please see here.
We appreciate this can be an onerous task. At Sniip, customer protection, card security and fraud prevention is our highest priority for the safety of all our users!
